Defense to a Straight Ankle Lock

First there is a drill you can do to get you foot out from under his armpit.

If he is standing over your and grabs your left foot...you are going to spin in that direction (getting your head towards his foot) this turns your heel inward towards his armpit, rather than under his forearm where he needs it to finish the lock. Now your right foot is going to push on his bicep as you pull your left foot out. As you drill, simply alternate feet.

If you have an open guard and your opp wraps up your ankle for an achilles lock...and you are too late pulling your foot out as previously explained......you have two options. The first option is to sit up as your opp sits back and mount him.

Mount: (w/ gi)

1. Whichever arm wraps up your foot, grab that tricep (with gi grab slack behind elbow)

2. Your other hand grabs his opposite collar (or behind the head with no gi)

As he sits back, you sit up with him....

3. The hand that you had on his elbow, now posts on the floor, while your other hands lets go of his collar and posts on his knee. You are going to have to push his knee down between your legs as you sit up

Once you do that, you will have the mount, but he will still have a hold of your foot/shin. From here you can go right to a submission.

4. Both of your hands grab you opp's elbow and you kick your leg further thru the hole.

5. Monoplata- now post that foot on the ground and wrap his elbow up like you are doing a heel hook! His arm will be too deep for him to move it or pull it out. Just crank it forward as your turn your hips for the finish.

6. Arm Lock- Let his arm bend out of the shoulder lock and sit back with the perdenicular arm bar

Defending the Arm Bar (Hitchhiker Escape)

From the mount position, if your opp sits back with an arm bar...

**Timing is very important with this defense!**

1. Turn your legs out AWAY from your opp, towards his feet! Your inside leg kicks over your outside as your switch your hips, rolling to your stomach.

2. As you do this you are turning your thumb up

Once you do this it turns your arm so it can no longer be threatened. Immediately pull your arm out and look to get to side mount.

Defending the Arm Bar

If you are mounted, when you opponent goes for the arm bar...

1. The arm that is being arm barred holds your other arms bicep, and that arm holds your opp's elbow

2. Swing your legs up to get momentum and as they drop scissor them towards your opp to help you get up pushing your opp onto his back

3. Bring your knee (the same side of the one that is being arm barred) up under your opp's butt

4. Let go of your opp's elbow and grab his leg

5. Then shake your arm out until it is free....immediately take that arm and reach across to your opp's opposite shoulder, pop your head out and pass to side mount

Defense: Triangle

Option 1

1. POSTURE UP

2. Stand up and get one knee in the middle of his butt and sit so that knee opens his legs

3. Pop your head out and pass to side mount immediately

Option 2

Option 3

If your opps has not gotten your arm across your throat yet...

1. Reach both arms around his neck in Thai clinch position

2. Pull his chin to his chest

3. Sprawl your legs out

Option 4

1. Grip both your hands together

2. Stand up

3. PUMP your hands up as your look up to break his legs open

Option 5

Sit and Pry

1. Stand up, then sit on your butt getting your butt as close to his as possible

2. Reach around and put your hands on his stomach, followed by both your legs

3. Pry your head back (like posturing laying down)

Defense: Heel Hook

1. You always want to roll in the direction that your opp is turning your heel!! If you try to roll the other way you will tighten the lock

2. Roll to your stomach - Get your hands to the mat

3. Drive your knee down to the mat - Once your knee is on the mat you are free from the heel hook

4. Your other foot pushes off his ass and your pull your leg free (Almost like a sprinter starting a race) In a tourney you want to make this as unconfortable as possible!
