Takedowns from Certain Tie-Ups

Here are some GO-TO takedowns from particular tie-ups....

OPPONENT GRABS YOUR HEAD
"Knee Drop" Throw

1. As soon as he grabs your head (assuming for the example that he grabs with his left hand) you are going to hold his arm in place. Your left hand hooks over his elbow.

2. Your right hand immediately swims inside and pushes on his shoulder....preventing him from closing the distance.

3. By you pushing him away he is typically going to want to push back into you...as he does so you are going to turn your back to him as your right arm slides under his right arm (the hand that is grabbing your head)

4. Now you are going to drop to both of your knees and pull your opponent over you

There are few options as to where to go once on the ground. The best option to secure position is to reach your free hand (left) around his head (your right hand will be holding his tricep) and secure a north-south choke

WHIZZER
Outside Leg Trip

1. Assuming you have the whizzer with your right arm....you are immediately going to push his head away with your left hand and get head position.

2. Now your left hand grabs his opposite wrist

Your right foot is going to be in front (bc you have the whizzer with that side)

3. You are going to quickly replace your right foot with your left by almost skipping in towards your opp. Your right foot now steps outside of his far (right) leg and blocks just above his knee.

4. As you do this, you let go of his wrist and your left hand goes to floor. Now as your turn your hips and pull him around you (using the whizzer) he will trip over your outside leg.

This is the takedown GSP did to Hughes

FROM INSIDE CONTROL

1. reach your right hand between his legs as if you are going for a fireman's carry

As your opp steps his right leg back to defend this....

2. Push his hand in towards his body (this is able to happen rather easily bc he stepped back...usually it would be hard to just push his arm across bc it was close to his body, but now having his arm reached outward it much easier) The reason you are pushing his arm across his body bc you are going to trap that arm along with the takedown making defense almost impossible

3. Now just treat it as a double leg takedown....step in, clasp your hands together around his body

4. Keep your head TIGHT to his ribs (this will trap that arm)

5. Finish the double

From Wrist/Arm Control

This is a very simple yet very effective hold.

1. Your right hand grabs your opps left tricep, as your right hand reaches across and grabs that same wrist. The reason this hold is so tight bc he would normally break the grip in the wrist by pulling out towards the thumb but bc you are holding his tricep on that side it makes it almost impossible.

So you are going to take advantage of the fact that he cant free his arm....

2. Put your left foot (same side as the arm you are grabbing) and sit back

3. As you sit back immediately wrap up the triangle

Takedown: Single Arm Hip Toss

This takedown (set up) works well for me. It came very natural!

This position starts in the standing position with your opp's right hand around your neck.

As soon as he grabs your neck...

1. Your adjacent hand draps over his arm and locks his arm in place!

2. Your right hand immediately swims inside his other arm and pushes away on his shoulder. As you push away he is going to push back into you; as he does that....

3. Let go of his shoulder with your right hand, and as your turn your butt towards your opp....swim your right arm under this opposite arm (the one that is grabbing your neck)

4. As you turn your butt towards him and step your left foot behind you, btween his legs.....keep your laces DOWN!!

5. Now just drop down to both knees, roll your shoulder down towards the ground and flip your opp over you.

6. Immediately reach your left arm around his neck ending up in the Jeff Monson over/under north/south choke.

Takedown Set Ups

Today I was taught some very simple set ups for the double leg. They all work off different variations of the arm drag and the most important thing are trying to accomplish is a slight angle on your opponent...you NEVER want to attempt a double leg straight on bc your opp has his head, hands and arms to stop you and can easily sprawl so we are looking for a slight angle....that is what the arm drag does for you!

First I will give the 4 set ups that we did today....
(Assuming your opp's left leg is forward)

1. Hold you opp's left wrist as your right arm does the arm drag (most basic)

2. If your opp has inside control of your right arm (hand on your bicep) put your hand on his shoulder and then just pull your hand down to his hand poping his hand forward. All you are looking for is a slight reaction.

3. If your opp puts his hand on your shoulder....your arm comes inside out clearing his hand off your shoulder (like a windshield wiper) as your left hand reaches for his tricep to get the arm drag

4. Put your hand on your opps head, his normal reaction will be to grab your hand (to take it off his head) with his ajacent hand and he will grab your wrist keeping control of it. You are going to let him hold it, but you are going to punch your hand down across to your opposite hip. At the same time your left hand is going to reach for his tricep to do the arm drag. Your arms should cross at the same time (punch right hand to left hip, as your left hand reaches for tricep)

As you do all these arm drags you want to be as close to your opp as possible....heads touching is ideal. And remember all you are looking for is a split second to get the angle.

All these arm drags are pulling your opp to your left. So you are going to step you front foot slightly to your right to get the angle. Then drop your level, grab the back of the knees and take a BIG step thru him with your right foot.....followed by a BIG step with your left foot. You are basically RUNNING thru him.

Steps:
1. Set up
2. Arm Drag
3. Small step with front leg to get angle
4. Simultaneosuly: Drop level, reach for knees, take BIG step with right leg
5. Finsih with big step with left leg

Takedown: Sitting to Triangle

You are going to use this takedown when your opp grabs the back of your head from a standing position. As soon as he grabs the back of your head (for this example he grabs you with his right hand, by your left ear)

1. Immediately grab his other arm by his wrist so he can not get total control of you.

2. Your other hand (the one adjacent to the hand he is holding the back of your neck with) reaches and grabs the around the back of his neck.

3. Now you are going to pick up your left leg (the same leg as the side he is holding your neck with) and put it on his hip, and push away and you sit back to guard.

4. As you sit back to guard push his left hand between your legs and throw your legs up around his shoulders.....so he basically falls right into a triangle. Your left hand is already around the back of his neck so its easy to grab your shin to adjust the triangle if need be.

* The most important step is making sure as you fall back you push his arm between your legs, otherwise you are just sitting back to regular guard.

**You can easily change this takedown to a flying triangle by rather than falling backwards you can instead jump and get your legs around his shoulders. Make sure your opps is holding your before you attempt the flying triangle, otherwise you may fall back on your head.

Takedown: Off of a Pumble

In a no-gi match if you are locked up (over, under) with your opp and you are pumbling for position....When you're pumbling you are looking to get double underhooks....

1. Whichever hand you just pumbling inside you want to step that same leg forward, deep between your opp's legs....as you drop your level

2. As you pumble....you are going to acheive the double underhook position and clasp your hands around the lower back of your opp.

So you now have your hands gable gripped behind your opp's back and you have one leg stepping deep between his legs.

3. Now just pull his hips towards you as you walk thru him taking his down to his back....and just walk up to full mount.

Tip: Often times a pumble becomes a give and take...you pumble inside with one hand only to lose that control with the other hand, bc your opp also pumbled......so whichever hand you already have inside control with you want to jack that shoulder UP (keeping your shoulder tight to your opp's) making it almost impossible for your opp to pumble his hand inside. This should ensure you get the double underhooks.

Takedown: Foot on Hip- Kick Over

Start with normal gi grips (Right hand on opp's left collar and left hand on opp's tricep), you will normally do this takedown if you opp is bending over (if he isn't you can snap him down)

1. Put your right foot on his hip

2. Step your left foot up between is feet than sit your butt down towards down towards your heel

3. As you fall back keep your right knee in (dont extend it outward, you keep better control if you keep your knee bent) and kick your opp over your right shoulder as you roll over your left shoulder

4. Roll over with him and get the mount.

*If when you sit back you can not kick your opp over your head you can just sit into guard

Takedown: Sit out to Arm Bar

Starting with control of your opp's collar and tricep....when your opp has a similiar grip and he is using his front arm to push you backwards....

1. Take your back foot (right) and put it on his front thigh. Push his front leg back to off balance him.

2. Sit back to that side on your buttcheek and continue to roll onto that hip

3. Swith your grips. Let go of his collar with your right hand and grab his arm.

4. Kick your left leg over your opp's head in an arm bar position - If you can not get it around his head just lock toes around the back of his head with your shin across his neck

5. Roll to your stomach (balancing on your head) hold your opp's hand with both arms and drive your hips down to finish the arm bar

Takedown: Standing Guillotine to Double Leg

Starting with over/under control (right arm under, left arm on opp's tricep).....

1. Using your left hand (the hand on the tricep) reach around and grab the opposite side of your opp's head (by his ear) and step back with your left leg (circling counterclockwise) pulling your opp's head down towards your armpit

2. Your left hand goes under your opp's neck in guillotine position

3. Your right hand holds your left wrist

4. Step your hips forward and crank counterclockwise lifting your right elbow up to finish the submission- You want your elbow in the middle of his throat and your bicep and forearm on his carotid arteries

You can finish right here but sometimes when you snap your opp's head down and reach under his throat for the guillotine he will grab your wrist and try to step backwards. As he does this his weight comes up fast which leaves him vulnerable to be taken down. So as your opp steps back pulling his head up out of the guillotine....

1. Step in with your left foot (heel, toe, knee) for the double leg. Both hands around the outside of his knees (pinching them together), your head is on his hip (looking up) and your right foot steps behind him so you can turn the corner for the takedown. You pull your opp's knees in towards your body and your head drives in the direction you taking him down.

Takedown: Single Leg

I really like this takedown! Start with collar and sleeve (tricep) control....with your head tight to your opps shoulder...

1. You want to get your opp's right foot between your feet so circle counterclockwise, that should make your opp step between your feet.

2. Use your left foot to scoop up your opp's foot - Wrap your foot around his heel and lift it up off the ground.

3. Reach down with your left hand (letting go of his sleeve) and grab his leg pulling his shin up tight to your groin. Pinch your knees to hold it up there

4. Now reach down with your other hand and figure 4 your arms- Your left hand is under his leg and grabs your right bicep. Your right hands pushes down on the thigh like a RNC.

5. Push your opp backwards so he hops back opening his legs

6. Step back with your left leg, twist your hips and push your opp's thigh down....this will take him down on his back

Takedown: Fireman's Carry

Starting with collar and elbow control (right hand on collar, left on elbow)...

You want to get your opps to bring his left foot back. so you...

1. Take your right foot and bring it between your opp's leg and try to hook his left leg as if you are trying to do a Judo throw...this forces your opp to lift his left foot and bring it to the back...leaving his right leg forward

2. Using the grip on his elbow (gi) left his arm up and drop down to both knees hugging his right leg

3. Your right hand reaches between his legs - left hand keeps control of his sleeve

4. Pull down with your left hand as your right arm throws his body upside down (the same motion as if you were doing a hookshot in basketball)

Takedown: From standing back control

If you have your opp's back with your hands clasped in front of him in a position in which you could suplex him...

1. Threaten the suplex...this will force your opp to lower his weight to defend the suplex

2. As he drops his weight you drop with him. Step your right foot up next to your opp's right foot. Then step your left right up against the back of his heel pinning his foot from stepping back

3. Sit to your left ass cheek and you snap your opp down - Get side mount

Takedown: Outside Single w/ CLothesline

This takedown starts the same way as the outside firemans carry...Start with your right hand on your opp's collar, and your left on his sleeve by the tricep. You begin with your legt leg forward and you step back keeping that leg forward...you want to get his weight on his right leg...

1. Lift your opp's elbow with your left arm

2. Drop your right knee to the outside of his right foot and swing your left foot around wide and fast clockwise...as you do this your left arm reaches around his knee

3. Gable grip your hands, keep your head to his chest and left his foot up to your groin pinching your knees tight

4. Step back with your left foot (keeping your right planted) and your right hand chops at the neck of your opp and your turn your hips towards your back leg

Takedown: Single Leg w/ Snap Down (Option 2)

As you pull your opp forward if he stays low and you can not get your head to his chest...

1. Simultaneously:
- Drop your left knee to the outside of his right leg and swing your right leg clockwise around (this is like an outside firearms carry in wrestling)
- Reach around his leg with your left hand and lift it up
- Pull him down by his collar

It is important to do this all fast and with momentum or he will just post his left hand down to the mat to stop the takedown

Takedown: Single Leg w/ Snap Down

You start with right hand on your opp's collar and left arm on sleeve by elbow...your left leg is forward...

1. Pull your opp's right leg forward by stepping back. When you step back keep your left leg forward, so step back right then left.

2. Let go of opp's elbow, reach around your opp's front leg keeping your head to the inside on his chest

3. Simultaneously lift his leg and pull him forward by his collar

Takedown to Arm Bar

You MUST keep your opp tight while doing this move!

1. Start with head and arm control. Right hand on head, left on tricep

2. Bring your right leg (or as a rule of thumb, the same side which has head control) up across his body, tucking your foot under his armpit

3. At the same time lay back on a 90 degree angle

Your weight will pull him down with you, he can not support all your weight so he will fall to his knees

4. Immediately swing your left leg over your opp's head and finish the arm bar

Takedown: Roll Sweep

1. Starting with right hand on opp’s lapel and left on gi next to tricep

2. Push opp to your right to get him to push back into you

3. Hook your right foot inside opp’s left knee

4. Sit on your left hip, while pulling him down with you

5. Kick your right leg up to turn him over

6. Try to mount right away

Takedown: Sinlge Leg Trip 2

Start with your right hand on your opp's collar and your left on his sleeve by his wrist. You want to hold by his wrist because so you can stop him from grabbing your collar. If he grabs your collar you are in a nuetral position so it's harder to get the takedown.

1. Start with your right foot forward, step back and pull your opp towards your right side. Your right foot should now be right between his feet.

2. Drop your right knee to the ground between his feet and turn your foot outwards behind his left heel.

3. Using the collar grip pull your opp back as your look over your right shoudler and turn your hips to the right.

4. Immediately get left knee up for the pass.

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Takedown: Single leg w/ Trip

1. Starting with both hands having inside control (on opp’s biceps)

2. You want to pull the leg that you want to take grab forward, so you pull your opp and circle him towards that leg to get him to put weight on it

3. Drop both hands down around the back of his knee (gable grip) and put your head on your opp's chest (Do not put your head too low or he can defend the takedown by pushing your head away) and bump him back. This bump gets the weight off is front leg and makes it easier to pick his leg up

4. Now pull him forward to get his supporting leg forward

5. With your right hand (or inside hand) reach around the back of his supporting knee (thumb down) and drive forward to trip him and get the takedown

6. Step your leg out over your opp’s leg and walk up to side mount

Takedown: Single Leg Trip

1. Start with head control (right hand)

2. Get tight under hook with your left arm, put your head tight to his head and circle to your left

3. This will pull your opp's weight forward onto his right leg

4. As soon as he puts his weight on that leg...drop down clasp your hands around his waist (gable grip) and put your head to his chest. Give pressure with your head to push his shoulders back and use your grip around his waist to pull his hips into you.

5. Take your left leg and wrap it around his right leg (low behind the ankle not the knee) and pull his foot off the ground

Both you and your opps are now standing on one leg

7. HOP back counter clockwise and your opp will fall

8. You should be able to get your leg over your opp's and get to side mount

Takedown: Duck Under

1. Start with head and arm control – move works best when opp is pushing into you

2. If right hand is on head, start w/ left leg fwd

3. Push opp’s arm up, drop to back knee while snapping opp down then circle to back – keep head tight and look up so you don't get guillotined.

4. Drag opp fwd onto all 4’s keeping bottom hand under neck on shoulder and top hand on hi (or belt)

5. Fall to your hip and slide your near side hook in (Don’t be afraid to lay on your hip bc if opp rolls into you you'll have his back)

6. Take back and get 2nd hook, get underhooks and try to flatten out

7. RNC (Brabo choke is also there immediately after you drag opp down)
